Chapter: “Caenorhabditis elegans Nematode: A Versatile Model to Evaluate the Toxicity of Nanomaterials In Vivo”.

The chapter describes the use of the well-known model object C. elegans nematode as a tool for nanotoxicological studies. Separate sections of the chapter are devoted to methods for modifying the surface of nematodes with nanomaterials (including the original method developed by our laboratory staff for introducing nanomaterials into the body of nematodes by creating "nano-baits" - living microorganisms carrying various nanomaterials), the toxic effects of nanomaterials, and the characterization of C.elegans nematodes using a set of microscopy methods. Examples of visualization of nematodes using transmission and scanning electron, fluorescence, dark-field and hyperspectral microscopy are given, as well as data on nanotopography and mechanical properties of nematodes obtained using atomic force microscopy in a liquid (i.e., under conditions close to the natural habitat nematodes) and in the air was presented in this chapter.
