Green Energy: how to save the eagles of Tatarstan

The teaching and research laboratory of the Elabuga Institute of KFU works with labeling with gps-trackers and ringing eagles.

Ornithologist Rinur Bekmansurov, Head of the Educational and Scientific Laboratory for Monitoring and Protection of Birds, told about the implementation of the grant of PJSC TATNEFT. The grant was won by the laboratory in 2018 to conduct research for the study of the territorial relations of eagles nesting in Tatarstan.

The ornithologist explained that the priority of research in the laboratory is to study the life of large birds of prey, such as eagles and ernes. Every year chicks are tagged with special colored rings. It allows to identify birds in nature remotely using modern photographic equipment. Ringing increases data on migrations of birds of prey born in Tatarstan, their wintering grounds, and causes of death are replenished annually.

In addition, the laboratory mastered the method of tagging birds of prey with special gsm / gps-trackers, which allows to obtain more detailed information on the movements of birds, starting from their native nest. As part of the grant, two gsm / gps trackers and 60 sets of colored rings for eagles and ernes were purchased additionally.

At the second stage of the implementation of the grant, in July, tagging of solar eagles (burial eagles) and large spotted eels is also planned.
