Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso: 'The main problem in pedagogy is a broken link between research studies and their application in schools'

A paper session involving Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at El Paso Vladik Kreinovich was held in the framework of the International Research-to-Practice Conference “Continuing Teacher Education: New Concepts and Technologies” within the International Forum on Teacher Education.

Prof. Kreinovich made a presentation on the topic “Geometric Reformulation of Learning Models Can Help Prepare Better Teachers”.

“Pedagogical universities provide teachers with knowledge of how effectively educate and apply teaching methods. Most of these recommendations are based on complex mathematical models of learning. However, not all teachers are mathematicians, and they don’t know the essence of these models. In our work written together with Olga Kosheleva, we clarify how to explain some of these recommendations in a simple way using a simplified geometric learning model”.

According to Vladik Kreinovich, the main problem in pedagogy is a broken link between research studies and their application in schools.

“A fair number of scholars in the field of education and psychology are developing various methods and techniques. Unfortunately, not all of them are available for teachers. It doesn’t mean that we should stop conducting research. But we should pay our attention to the already time-tested studies, methods and best practices, and we should introduce them to schools. As far as I am concerned, cutting-edge technologies are already used in some schools. The effectiveness of learning has significantly increased there. If the practice of university-school cooperation is introduced everywhere, we can talk about a great progress in the field of education. But how to ensure this cooperation is a big problem”.
