Russian Science Foundation Grant Winners Conference – From Molecule to Medication

The forum opened today at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology.

During his greeting, Rector Ilshat Gafurov elaborated on how biomedicine was chosen as a priority several years ago and has progressed during this time. In particular, he touched upon the University Clinic and medication production facilities with Tatpharm.

Importantly, the Clinic has retained its functions as a general medicine facility for the public within the universal health insurance system – which is not the case with other university clinics in Russia. Since joining KFU in 2016, it has developed rapidly, with new departments opening on a regular basis. Tomorrow, on 27th November, a new general service outpatient department will be opened. The annual budget has grown to 1.5 billion rubles.

Oleg Sinyashin, Director of the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that KFU is on great terms with the Russian Science Foundation. According to him, much has been done in the last five years to help understand how important the Foundation is for national science. About a third of applications from Kazanian scientists find support, which is a lot.

As for the plenary session itself, other reports were dedicated to flu prevention, vaccines, analytical medicine, and new medications.

Five members of the Foundation’s Expert Board are participating. In the last five years, RSF has distributed 80 billion rubles in research grant funding, with approximately one in six applicants having received the desired support.
