Winners of Russian First Aid Championship Announced

Kazan Federal University finished second among non-medical universities.

The Championship was held at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology on October 12th -13th. The teams were distributed between medical universities (16) and non-medical universities (8).

Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University emerged victorious in the first group. Dagestan State Medical University and Reaviz Medical University were behind it on the pedestal.

Udmurt State University was the best among non-medical universities, with KFU and Ulyanovsk State University following.

The competition comprised three stages: a greeting, a theoretical test, and a practical test. The latter took place at the Medical Simulation Center and was very captivating. Many complicated tasks were thrown at the contestants, including first aid after a RTA, heart and lung resuscitation, out-of-hospital child delivery, resuscitation of a newborn, tracheal intubation, and gastric lavage.

Everything was aimed at maximum realism – actors were invited to play injured people, and the test ground was completely unfamiliar to the participants, so they had to keep up with the ticking clock under pressing circumstances.

Every test point had jury members present, and they evaluated the proceedings in real time. The contestants later confessed that they had been most overwhelmed by the resuscitation of a newborn and by the clock, but also admitted they had had much fun. After the competition a special master class was held for them concerning first aid during delivery.

A session on mistakes was held before the award ceremony. The ceremony itself included employees of the Sklifosovsky First Aid Institute and Russian Society for Simulation Learning in Medicine (ROSOMED). Both institutions served as sponsors of the event.

The Championship is officially called Medathlon and will be held in Kazan annually.
