Bosphorus University Delegation at Kazan University

Five representatives of one of the best Turkish universities arrived to discuss cooperation on August 9th.

The team comprised Vice-Rector Aysin Ertuzun, Advisor to the Rector Zafer Yenal, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Gunay Anlas, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Nilgun Isik, and Professor Birgul Kutlu Bayraktar.

Vice-Rector of KFU Linar Latypov met the guest and told them about the University during a traditional tour around the History Museum and the Lenin Memorial Classroom.

At the ensuing meeting Vice-Rector Ertuzun prefaced her presentation by saying that this visit is a continuation of negotiations held by Rector Mehmed Ozkan who came to KFU in May 2017. She then talked about her university’s structure, strategy, and primary areas of interest. Bosphorus University was founded by American citizens in 1863 and provides tuition in English language. BU is currently an alma mater for 16 thousand undergraduates and graduate students and 2 thousand PhD candidates. The university comprises six campuses, 127 research labs, and 29 research centers. It can also boast a very comfortable accommodation facility appropriately called “Superdorm”.

Kazanites also presented their respective research areas; among the speakers were Deputy Director for Research of the Higher School of IT and Information Systems Maxim Talanov, Director of the Institute of Computational Mathematics and IT Sergey Mosin, Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics Maxim Khramchenkov, and Associate Professor Ramil Kashapov.

The sides agreed that IT, robotics, and engineering seem like the most promising spheres of common interest for now. Prospects in language and culture studies were also discussed. Turkish language has traditionally been very widely studied in Tatarstan and KFU, in particular, because of close historical, cultural, and linguistic ties between Tatars and Turkish people. For example, 276 students were learning it in the 2016/2017 academic year. Links between Tatarstani and Turkish business are also sizable.

The next steps in cooperation are negotiations in relevant subject areas. They are scheduled to start right from the beginning of the academic year in September.
