British politician Keith A. Whitmore at KFU

Keith A. Whitmore, a British politician and current President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe visited Kazan Federal University on November, 4 within the frames of his official visit to the Republic of Tatarstan. He was particularly interested in scientific traditions and history of the University that was the reason why he made a tour of the University’s Museum of History and spent some time at the library section which contains rare books and manus­cripts.

Mr. Whitmore became a member of the Congress of the Council of Europe in 1996. He was elected President of the Congress on 26 October 2010. Other offices he had previously held included Chairman of the Institutional Committee of the Congress, Vice-President of the Congress, Chairman of the Congress's Sustainable Development Committee and head of the UK delegation to the Congress.

Reference: The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe is an institution representing local and regional authorities from the forty-seven member states of the Council of Europe. It has two chambers, the Chamber of Local Authorities and the Chamber of Regions. The Congress holds its plenary meetings at the Palace of Europe in Strasbourg, where its permanent Secretariat is located.
