Wireless monitoring network for well drilling

The exclusive know-how was developed by the Department of Radiophysics under the charge of Prof. Oleg Sherstiukov

Hardware-software solution designed by KFU researchers allows solving multiple tasks of geotechnical survey automation during well construction, including on-line monitoring of drilling, and calculating technological and economic variables.

A distinguishing feature of the system is an application of wireless data and information network with radio transmitting set, which has self-contained power supply. The set's battery life varies from 10 days to several months, and the communication distance between the transducer and the station reaches up to 500 meters.

“The invented solution is a second to none in Russia. Up to the present day, all national oil service companies used wired systems for drilling monitoring” says project officer, AP at the Department of Physics Evgeny Ryabchenko. Wireless system helps to debulk the equipment as well as to decrease the installation time. Furthermore, it has unlimited expandability: any transducer or new program module can be added without any hardware or software modifications. Flexibility, fail-safe behavior and high degree of modularity allows using the system in various areas of industry and production.

Wireless network can change its structure depending on the quality of radio signal. In case of signal degradation, any of transmitting units can reroute through its neighbor to the station. The software provides on-line monitoring of tech parameters for several wells simultaneously.

The project, currently undergoing licensing, was tested at TNG Group oil-service company and is ready for commercial application.
