The international conference opened in the morning today.
The guests of the Congress were welcomed by Vice-Premier of Tatarstan Leyla Fazleeva, Rector of Kazan University Ilshat Gafurov, Academician Irina Beletskaya, Chair of the Department of Organic Chemistry at Moscow State University Valentin Nenaydenko, President of the Tatarstan Academy Sciences Myakzyum Salakhov, and Director of the Kazan Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Oleg Sinyashin.
Kazan University, historically being one of the key centers of organic chemistry in the world, has produced many distinguished researchers in this field, one of whom is the congress’s eponymous Vladimir Markovnikov, creator of the Markovnikov’s rule for addition reactions. Currently, KFU is heavily involved in petroleum chemistry, pharmaceutics, catalysis, graphene studies, and other related areas – all of them were mentioned in one way or the other during today’s plenary session.
The most heartwarming moment of the ceremony was when Academician Alexander Konovalov, Professor and erstwhile rector of Kazan University (1979 - 1990), received this year’s Markovnikov Medal from Mr. Nenaydenko.
The forum is scheduled for 24th – 28th June and is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the periodic table and the Year of the Periodic Table by UNESCO.
