Kazan University Becomes More Involved in the Regional Healthcare System

A meeting of the Council of Medical Executives of Tatarstan was held on August 29th.

The main topic was innovation and IT in medical facilities of the Republic of Tatarstan. However, the meeting itself was prefaced by a collective tour around the University Clinic which has lately become one of the best in the region. Chief Medical Officer Almir Abashev talked about some projects, including the Heart Transplant 2020 and Kidney Transplant 2018 initiatives, IVF technologies, and new trends in preemptive health monitoring of the general population. These programs have organically become the parts of the University’s SAU Translational Medicine. The Clinic and the University are both open for cooperation with their colleagues from other provincial hospitals and institutions of healthcare.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov said about this, “We have moved towards this for a long time; we have facilities and resources for further development, and we want to create a top-notch medical science center. Kazan University currently produces two thirds of the scientific research in the Republic, and our medical cluster earned 500 million rubles of revenue in 2016. But we don’t want to stand alone and separate ourselves from other medical institutions of the Republic; we are willing to promote openness and mutual complementarity. We are ready to cooperate, to listen to advice, to receive assignments and to provide our scientific opinions and staff”.

He was supported by the Minister of Healthcare of Tatarstan Adel Vafin. The Minister said that KFU can provide trained experts, and not only in medicine. For example, e-healthcare systems need support and updating. Their successful implementation and sustainability are very important for the Ministry. KFU has demonstrated its willingness to be involved in relevant work.

As examples, many projects from different KFU institutes were presented to the Council yesterday. They are all united as being the parts of SAU Translational Medicine.

Everyone agreed that cooperation needs to be deepened. For instance, KFU students have to receive opportunities to intern not only at the University Clinic but at the other provincial hospitals as well. The sides agreed to be more active in informational and technological exchange. Such meetings will now become regular.
