Nauka i Zhizn’ (Science and Life), one of the oldest-running Russian magazines, commended Rustam Daminov.
The idea of the contest was to involve as many scientists as possible into speaking about their subjects. 78 works were submitted.
The silver award went to Dr. Daminov for his publication about rattlebacks. He says, “After reading an article about them, I became interested in how to make a rattleback more effective, i. e. capable of multiple reversals, and bigger.”
A rattleback is a sort of a spinning top which rotates stably only in one direction, starts “rattling” and then reverses its rotation. “This is a sort of a “violation” of the conservation of angular momentum, an illusion. Students like watching such experiments,” adds Daminov.
His own multi-reverse rattleback was patented in 2018.
