Matrix (Latin) - the source, the beginning

Students of mechanical and mathematical institute know that matrix is the basic mathematical tool of linear algebra. They are also used in mathematical analysis, quantum mechanics and other natural sciences. In recent decades, the matrix penetrated into the theory of optimization, mathematical economics, game theory, combinatorial analysis and other areas of applied and theoretical mathematics.

However, from the middle of the XIX-th century the matrix theory is an exciting independent science with its internal problems and the logic of development. Its founders: William Hamilton, A. Cayley, Sylvester, J., K. Weierstrass, G. Frobenius. Today in the world at least four journals on the matrix theory are published in which new theorems appear monthly.

On the department of algebra the matrix theory is studied by senior lecturer Y.A. Alpine and senior lecturer S.N. Ilyin. The first of them studies the traditional subject - real (in particular, non-negative) and complex matrix, and the second of them studies the matrix on general algebraic systems (lattices and semirings).
