In September 2013, the Higher School of Foreign Languages and Translation Studies was introduced at the Institute of International Relations. Today it trains Bachelors and Masters in Linguistics (programmes 45.03.02 and 04.04.02).

The Bachelor’s programme is realised in two areas of specialization: Translation and Translation Studies and Theory and Methodology of Foreign Language and Culture Teaching. Within the two specialties students study two foreign languages. They can choose among such languages as English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Turkish, Hindi, Vietnamese, Persian, Swahili or Indonesian. Starting with the third year of study, students are given a unique opportunity to learn a third foreign language.

The main purpose of the specialty Translation and Translation Studies is to train translators and interpreters who have mastered modern translation technologies, who can do research in the theory, history and methodology of translation, who can work in political, economic, legal, cultural and educational spheres in Russia and abroad, in particular, in leading international organizations, international non-governmental organisations, national and multinational corporations and companies.

Theory and Methodology of Foreign Language and Culture Teaching is implemented by training students in two (and more) foreign languages as well as developing the theory of foreign language and culture teaching, practices of foreign language training in various fields of life, studying cross-cultural interaction and communication and life of the peoples and regions, and practices of teaching internship.

Master’s programmes of the Higher School of Foreign Languages and Translation Studies combine training for research activities and acquisition of additional skills within the chosen fields:

The Division employs more than 180 members, including 12 Doctors of Science and 95 Candidates of Science.

In total, more than 2,000 students study at the Division. This includes more than 200 international students from Azerbaijan, Algeria, Armenia, Afghanistan, Belarus, Vietnam, Egypt, Iraq, Kazakhstan, China, Colombia, Kyrgyzstan, Congo, Syria, Moldova, Tajikistan, Taiwan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Ecuador.

The teaching staff of the Higher School of Foreign Languages and Translation Studies also carries out language (English, German, French) training of students majoring in social studies and humanities, natural sciences, physics and mathematics in the following divisions of the university:
