The article presents the authors’ view on the history of national (Tatar-medium) education at Kazan University. Based on the memoirs of H. Usmanov, the first Chairman of the Department of the Tatar Language and Literature in the 1950s, as well as memories, letters, and diaries of its teachers and first students we reconstruct the life, activities, main areas of work, and the range of the research conducted by the Department in the first decades after its establishment. The achievements of the Department served as a good foundation for developing Tatar-medium philological education in the USSR.
