The paper gives a general review of modern Tatar literature in Bashkortostan, particularly, from the late 20th to early 21st century and uncovers the specifics of the literary process of the abovementioned period. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that the contemporary literature in Bashkortostan, its topical, ideological, aesthetic characteristics, genre and style tendencies are studied within the framework of a specific historical period. The paper focuses not only on the realist ideas that prevail in the literature of that period, but also on new styles and modern tendencies that emerged therein. It also touches upon a number of authors and their works that have yet to receive a well-deserved recognition from literary critics. The paper provides an insight on the development of Tatar prose and innovations in terms of literary forms and composition contributed by such literary figures as T. Tahirov, S. Povarisov, A. Magazov, R. Sabitov, R. Khannanov, E. Aghzami, M. Gyilazhev, I. Timerkhanov, Sh. Ismagilova; a brief insight into literary work of such authors as G. Gataullin, M. Kabirov, Kh. Mudarisova, D. Bulgakova, Z. Salikhova, A. Zakiev; and an in-depth analysis of M. Kabirov, K. Qara, Kh. Ismagilov, and D. Bulatova’s prose. Here, the works of Tatar authors from Bashkortostan are viewed as a step forward in development of not only the local lore, but the Tatar literature in general.
