The Department of Altaic Studies and Sinology is the graduate department and carries out educational, methodological and research activities in the field of Oriental Studies, Sinology, Korean Studies, Turkology, Japanese Studies and Oriental Philology, educational and extracurricular work with students, as well as training and retraining of pedagogical and scientific personnel in the field of Oriental Studies.
The department trains bachelors in Oriental studies. In the process of training, students study fundamental courses on the history, culture, politics of the countries of the studied language, and special attention is paid to language training in the main oriental languages of the department: Chinese, Korean, Turkish and Japanese.

Scientific directions of the department are actual problems of socio-cultural history, linguistics of the Far East, methods of teaching eastern languages, as well as studying modern Turkic languages and literature of Turkic peoples.
The lecturers and instructors of the department actively participate in conferences (scientific and practical), both university and regional, all-Russian and international. Together with the Confucius Institute the department holds an annual scientific and practical conference "Russia-China: History and Culture". In December 2016, the II International Scientific and Practical Conference "Russia and the Turkic-Muslim World: Actual Problems of Turkic Studies" was organized at the International Forum in the framework of the International Forum. Scientists from Armenia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan participated in the International Forum. In April 2017, the first International Scientific and Practical Conference "Actual Problems of Teaching Chinese and Other Oriental Languages in the 21st Century" was organized It became the annual discussion platform for discussing new modern trends and innovative methods in the teaching of Oriental languages.
