Abstract

A previously unknown complex of sources (“The Case of the Registry of Inspectors of Students at the Imperial Moscow University for Admission of Arkhangelsky Sergey to Students” (Central Document Storage until 1917)) has been discussed. These new data enable a more complete restoration of the early stage of life of Sergei Ivanovich Arkhangelsky, who was one of the most famous Soviet historians of medieval times (specializing in the history of England).

The materials of the “Case” shed light on S.I. Arkhangelsky's origin. The paper introduces for the first time data about his close and distant relatives (including their professional and confessional affiliation), as well as the years of his studies at the Noble Institute (Nizhny Novgorod) and Moscow Imperial University, the procedures for marrying Aleksandra Vladimirovna Davydova, a noblewoman from Tambov. The procedures were typical for the nobility of the time. The paper also tells about their life in the first years of marriage.

A brief review of the participation of S.I. Arkhangelsky in the student protest movement of the early 20th century has been given.

In conclusion, the paper examines the little-studied earlier period of life of the outstanding historian S.I. Arkhangelsky (from his birth (1882) up to the graduation from Moscow University (1907)). The most important result of the study of the complex of sources is the discovery of new facts in the life of the scientist. It can serve as a basis for writing his intellectual biography. The importance of the intellectual biography of S.I. Arkhagelsky, in turn, is determined by the development of modern historical science in line with anthropology of historiography and searching for new sources of historiographic investigations.
