Located in Kandalaksha Gulf of the White Sea, about 10 km from the Arctic Circle.
A permanent research base of Kazan University was established here in 1978.
Today, it formally belongs to Saint-Petersburg State University, whereas research work in morphology, ecology and systematics is regulated by a special agreement between the two institutions.
