Russia’s Week in Giessen: partnership of hearts and minds

From June 11 to 15 the German town of Giessen hosted the Russia’s Week with participation of a representative delegation from KFU headed by Prof. Linar Latypov, Vice-Rector for External Relations.

2011/2012 is the Russian-German Year of Education, Science and Innovations. Giessen University was selected among other 14 German universities (out of 68 that applied) for the funding of the German Ministry of Education and Research to hold the Russian Week.

In her greeting address, Mrs. Grabe-Boltz, Giessen Mayor, pointed the historical interest of Germans in Russia. Following Catherine the Great (German by birth) many Germans, including those from the Giessen region, flocked to Russia. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Giessen has become one of major centers of resettlement for Germans arriving from Russia.

The Official Ceremony was attended by Russian Embassy staff, University management and numerous professors from the both sides participating in joint programs. The meetings are used as a platform for elaborating future research collaboration. The events also include an extensive cultural program, discussions, language courses, etc.
