2014 Admission Сampaign Report

The admission campaign at Kazan Federal University started on June 20. Thousands of school graduates applied to KFU, one of the leading educational institutions of Russia that has recently been awarded three stars in the QS ranking.

Sergey Ionenko, the responsible secretary for the admission campaign has shared the results of 2014 admission.

Numbers

- This year the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia has provided 4331 state-funded places, 3001 places for the main university, and 1330 places for Yelabuga and Naberezhnye Chelny Institutes. Additional places have been allocated for the applicants from Crimea and South-Eastern Ukraine.  

The admission campaign showed positive dynamics in the number of KFU applications. Fifty-four thousands of school graduates stated their willingness to study at KFU this year; it is nine thousand people more than last year. In total, 9341 people were accepted to the university, the number to grow by the students from close and far-abroad countries. Ten winners of Russian school Olympiads entered KFU; it is 62% of all such students in Tatarstan.

Foreign students

The percentage of foreign students has significantly grown this year; young people from Central Asia – Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan want to study in KFU. However, the most of applicants from far abroad will be registered in September.

Geography

If we speak about Russia, people from all over the country apply to Kazan University, from Far East to Murmansk and Kaliningrad. The leader is the Volga Federal Region; Tatarstan, Bashkiria, Samara Region, in particular.   Students from 83 regions of Russia have applied and people from 60 regions have been accepted.  

Crimea

State-funded quota for Crimeans was provided at the departments of engineering, science, physics, and mathematics. However, the students preferred linguistics, oriental and African studies, law, IT, medicine, economics, and pedagogics.

Fee-paying education

The special thing about 2014 admission campaign was the significant growth of applications for fee-paying education.

- We have already accepted 4 thousand fee-paying students. It means that almost 60% of KFU freshers will study at KFU for a fee.

The absolute leader of KFU institutes among fee-paying students is the Institute of Management, Economics and Finance that accepted over 1 thousand people.  There are over 700 freshers in the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies.

Unified State Exam

It is essential that we managed to keep the grade point average at the same level as last year – 76 points against last year's 76.3 regardless its decrease all over Russia. It shows that our students are smart and highly trained.

At some departments the USE grade point average mounted to its maximum – 87 points at the Applied Informatics Department of the Higher School of Information Technologies and Information Systems. The Institute of Management, Economics and Finance showed 82 points, one of the best results at humanities department in Russia. The Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies had 70 points; however, it was 87 points for oriental and African studies and 88 for linguistics department.

Enrolment competition

Average enrolment competition kept the last year's level of 11.5 applications for a position for publicly-financed departments and 3.4 people for a position for fee-paying education.

Summary

The exact enrolment information will be available after September 1 when the lists are updated with the number of foreign students.

2014 admission campaign was, no doubt, successful and KFU has received a new estimable addition.
