Kazan and Finnish Scholars Have Identified Areas of Common Interest

The round table with the representatives of University of Eastern Finland was held on May, 21.

We have already informed the audience that the delegation of the University of Eastern Finland headed by Rector Academic Jukka Mönkkönen arrived in Kazan Federal University in order to forge close links between the universities in medicine.

Today’s meeting with KFU Vice-Rector for Research Danis Nurgaliev, Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology Andrei Kiiasov and the initiative group of the Institute of Physical Education, Sport and Restorative Medicine was dedicated to the discussion of joint Open Lab for healthy and safe nutrition.

The goal of this Open Lab is implementing complex research to evaluate the effect of rational and safe nutrition on human health, in particular:

-          Study of food products, assessment of their chemical safety (customized nutrition plans for individuals, babies, schoolchildren and sportsmen);

-          Reconsideration of individual and group nutrition plans;

-          Evaluation of risks for different groups of population in conformity with World Health Organization.

During discussion the representatives of the University of Eastern Finland shared their experience. Director of the Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition Jussi Kauhanen said that 40 years ago the death rate from ischemic heart disease in Finland was the highest in the world. The saddest situation was in eastern part of the country. Finland initiated the project on healthy nutrition and lifestyle; the death rate was decreased by 84%. The research of blood pressure, levels of salt and cholesterol made significant contribution to the decision of the problem.

The main incentive to opening of the laboratory for healthy and safe nutrition in KFU was the data of Scientific Research Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences: up to 50% of noncontagious diseases among Russians are connected with malnutrition. Besides, deficit or abundance of some macro- and microelements are characteristic for many Russian regions. The OpenLab initiators plan to take prophylactic measures, define the risk groups among all ages (atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis, etc.), generate data bank with development markers for separate disease groups (including environment-related), identify the level of toxic and essential macro- and microelements in biologic environments and bio-substrate (biologic monitoring).

J. Kauhanen advised KFU scholars to separate narrow priority directions and groups of population in order to conduct regional-based detailed research.
