Opening of Neurobiology Laboratory

When the symbolic red ribbon was cut by rector Ilshat Gafurov, director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology Andrey Kiyasov and head of the project Rustem Khazipov, it marked the beginning of new research direction at KFU.

“Today we are witnessing the start of a unique neurobiological laboratory. My congratulations to all participants of the project implemented through the funds of the megagrant by the Russian Government. It signifies the revival of medical education at KFU. The laboratory will also become an interdisciplinary center attracting international experts” – was remarked by Ilshat Gafurov.

John Seal, advisor on regional scientific strategy at INSERM, marked the rapid evolution stage of the project and identified the results achieved since the beginning of the project.

Laboratory of Neurobiology will focus on the study of brain development before and after birth, in particular, the role of early brain activity in the formation of neural connections in a child, as well as the study of the developing nervous system disorders, such as epilepsy, traumatic injuries and anoxia of the brain.

Unique equipment of the laboratory costs 150 mln rubles. There is a devise that will provide three-dimensional imaging of the activity areas of the brain. During two years of purchasing and setting up the equipment, postgraduates and faculty members have received training in modern methods of electrophysiological and optical recording of brain activity at the Institute of Neurobiology (Inmed, Marseille, France), which has signed the agreement on scientific cooperation with KFU.
