Universiade-2013: Official Start

The Opening Ceremony of the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan took place in Kazan Arena on July, 6. The event was attended by Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.

The organizers promised a splendid show. Indeed, millions people around the world were overwhelmed with the awesome opening this night.

Kazan Arena is a unique stage in the form of pyramid designed for the Universiade opening ceremony. The huge cauldron with the Universiade flame is located on its peak. The stage is surrounded by the water which symbolizes the Volga River.

One of the brightest moments of the ceremony was when the peoples of Russia paraded around the stadium The spectators witnessed a theatrical presentation that featured the most vivid images and the living myths and legends of different ethnic groups living in Russia with ‘Chelovjek’ (Russian for man) as its main character, history force and an heir of rich culture.

A time machine let the spectators see the history of Russia –the host country: XIX century, 1917 Revolution, the first flight to space… The ceremony’s official part started with presentation of FISU flag accompanied by the song-unofficial anthem. Aliya Mustafina, the Olympic champion in gymnastics made oath on behalf of all athletes.

Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation and FISU President Gallien welcomed the participants.

On behalf of hospitable Russia I welcome you to the World Summer Universiade in Kazan. Isenmesez, Welcome!

Kazan is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities of our vast and multi-ethnic country. And successful, young athletes are gathered here today.

Friends, you represent different countries and continents, but during these July days you are joined in the World Summer Universiade, the scale of which is comparable to the Olympic Games.

We have done everything possible so that participants in this sporting event feel at home, are able to achieve outstanding results, and can withstand fierce competition and a difficult struggle.

Of course, the strongest will win, but the atmosphere and spirit of the Universiade will always be with each one of you.

You all share a love for sport, the highest ideals of fair competition and camaraderie, and hopes for success and victory.

In these ceremonial moments your hearts beat in unison, you’re together, shoulder to shoulder, and you share common feelings and ideas.

I hope that all of you can break new limits to achieve new personal records.

Let these seconds of struggle and triumph be vivid and memorable. And let them remain with you for life. Good luck!

I declare the 27th World Summer Universiade open!

The Universiade flame was ignited in the cauldron on top of the arches of the construction holding the giant projection screen. The flame was brought by well-known Russian sportsmen.

The Universiade started!
