British Ambassador Laurie Bristow Visited Kazan University

Dr. Bristow met with Rector Ilshat Gafurov and gave a speech in front of students and staff on November 1st.

These events were the high point of the embassy delegation's visit to Tatarstan, as Ambassador Bristow told Rector Gafurov during their talks.

The two sides discussed current cooperation between KFU and British universities and its prospects. Both the Ambassador and the Rector agreed that links must be expanded despite any temporary obstacles that may arise because of the political climate.

In his address to the students Dr. Bristow recalled some of his experiences as a student of the University of Cambridge. He said that it's especially important for the younger generations of the two countries to establish closer ties and promote intercultural understanding. He also touched on the grant programs planned by the British government. In particular, the number of grants for young foreign researchers will be doubled.

The students used the opportunity to ask questions, some of them pretty thorny. Among the discussed issues were Brexit, gender biases in politics, and the ongoing European migration crisis.

The Ambassador did not come alone, however. The delegation included Bart Verberck, Senior Editor at Nature Physics, and Joffrey Planchard, Institutional Partnerships Manager at Springer Europe. They held a master class about best publication practices for KFU employees.
