'Robot Lawyer' in the Works at Kazan University

A very ambitious project was de facto launched on October 25th

IT specialists and law experts of the University gathered to discuss the preliminary details and approaches.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov said during the meeting, “I’d want to see a system that could make a judgement based on incoming data. In case the data is insufficient it may also recommend to add something”.

Obviously, no final decisions are to be made by any machine, no matter how intelligent it eventually happens to be. The system can be aimed at relieving people of some routine operations – of which there are many in legal procedures.

Groups of postgraduates will be formed at ITIS and the Faculty of Law that will start working on this project (now titled “AI in Law”). Their graduation dissertations will be devoted to the problem.

The idea was, of course, in no small measure inspired by Watson, the existing question answering machine by IBM. By the way, Brazilian colleagues have already started their inquiries into the legal AI sphere – the existing prototype helps in the simplest traffic accident cases, but its knowledge and intellectual aptitude will undoubtedly grow.

Participants of the yesterday's meeting discussed some of the problems that might arise during initial stages of the development, such as semantic analysis.

During the next week two workgroups will be formed, and in one month they have to present their vision of the project schedule.
