International Conference on Algebra, Analysis and Geometry Welcomed by Kazan University

The conference wrapped up on July 1st.

We asked two prominent guests of the conference – Academician Anatoly Fomenko and Academician Yury Yershov – about their impressions from the conference and about the current state of their science.

- We are used to thinking that math is mostly a fundamental science….  But it does have practical meaning, right?

Yury Yershov:  Everyone knows how important computers are nowadays. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Alan Turing’s work where he described these machines. That’s one of the finest examples of the practical use of this science.

- Still, one mustn't forget about fundamental research as well

Yury Yershov:  Of course, not… Our society will degrade if we don’t advance fundamental research.

Anatoly FomenkoObviously, applied research is and will always be important. Still, mathematics is mostly a fundamental discipline that provides ideas for practice. I think that developing fundamental research is a priority, and if that is done, then everything will be OK with applications as well.

- Can we talk about the symbiotic relationship between theoretical and practical work today?

Anatoly Fomenko:  Not only today. We at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University have a symbiosis of mathematicians and mechanics researchers. I was a mechanics scholar first and then switched to mathematics. Many mathematicians work on applications in mechanics and hydrodynamics.

- Can interdisciplinary research help establish contacts between mathematicians and other researchers?

Anatoly FomenkoI think that mathematics can help in various scientific research fields. We at MSU have a rich experience of joint projects with biologists, chemists, physicists, sociologists.

- How does your cooperation with Kazan University develop?

Yury Yershov:  I visit your university fairly often, I was here two years ago. We are in strong cooperation with Marat Arslanov, Chair of the Department of Algebra and Mathematical Logic, and his colleagues.

My personal prospects of collaboration are linked to the new Center of Excellence in Mathematical Education at KFU, where I have been invited to lecture.

Anatoly Fomenko: We have a longstanding cooperation with the Department of Geometry and other mathematicians at Kazan University. We have joint publications on homogeneous space and gravitational systems.

This partnership has never been interrupted, and I hope it will strengthen further.
