Kazan University to Conduct Independent Evaluation of Nicotine Products

KFU’s two partners will be the Research Institute of Tobacco (Krasnodar) and the National Research Institute of Public Health (Moscow).

The first results of electronic tobacco heating system were presented at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology on June 23rd.

Ramil Khabriev, Director of the Institute of Public Health, said, “The manufacturer positions this electronic heating system as a qualitative change in comparison with traditional smoking systems and electronic cigarettes. They say that electronic heating significantly decreases the intake of harmful substances. That’s why colleagues from Krasnodar and Kazan have to evaluate all the provided evidence. The preliminary conclusion is that they are undoubtedly authentic. Now we have to conduct further research that has not been done by the manufacturer in order to confirm or deny their claims”.

The workgroup for non-medicinal nicotine use research was created by the Institute of Public Health two years ago.

Dr. Khabriev emphasized in his comments that the group in no shape or form approves smoking of tobacco or other substances. Their only task is to ascertain the correctness of the manufacturer’s research and conclusions on this particular heating technology.

Yevgeniya Gnuchikh, employee of the Institute of Tobacco, told us about what has already been done, “The data were obtained by the manufacturer in a lab and specified the chemical composition of the aerosol and its comparison with a control group of cigarettes. We studied the research methods and concluded that they are of sufficient quality. 58 substances were analyzed. The conclusion is that this product can potentially be less detrimental to a smoker’s health, but such a claim must be confirmed by the next stage – medical tests”.

Director of the Institute of Fumdamental Medicine and Biology of KFU Andrey Kiyasov added, “All the conducted research can be divided into three parts: physical and chemical analysis of the aerosol, preclinical trials, and volunteer tests. Preclinical trials can also be divided into in vivo and in vitro tests. Longitudinal tests, in our opinion, can help evaluate the health indicators that usually come to norm after quitting smoking. That’s why it will be difficult to profile risks of electronic heating in comparison with standard cigarettes. We suggest widening the included parameters. It will be of use to study intestinal microbiomes, how it is affected by the electronic heating system”.

The research report is due by the end of this year.
