Education in Islamic Studies Discussed at the Ministry of Education and Science

The scheduled meeting was attended by Rector Ilshat Gafurov and Director of the Institute of International Relations, History and Oriental Studies Ramil Khayrutdinov.

During this past two past Kazan University has formed a comprehensive system of Islamic studies. Rector Gafurov noted the special role of the Resource Center of Islamic Studies that was established in 2015 under the aegis of the federal Ministry of Education.

The Center is not a strictly educational entity. It serves as a discussion forum for researchers and organizations, cooperates with Muslim women’s unions, youth unions, and authorities. The Center aims to participate in forming a proactive Muslim community with high civil consciousness, constructive patriotism and aversion to all kinds of violent extremism and terrorism.

The program also involves colleagues from other institutions, such as the Institute of Asian and African Studies of MSU, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of SPbSU. Moreover, this is a unique example of a secular university teaching master and PhD programs to Muslim clerics. Thus the University’s Islamic education covers all areas of social life – public administration, research and education, and religious organizations.

The University also participates in introducing Islamic banking to Russia. There are already programs in this field implemented together with Malaysian and Iranian partners.

The workgroup will enact decisions for the improvement Islamic education, including some events where Kazan University can share its successful experience with peers.
