Problems of multimedia journalism of Eurasia are discussed at KFU

On December, 13 the 6th International Theoretical and Practical Conference “Multimedia journalism of Eurasia – 2012: international media projects, global network and informational trends of East and West” was opened in KFU Assembly Hall of Institute of Oriental Studies and International Relations.

The Conference is traditional; the necessity of its holding appeared in the beginning of the century as the result of rapid development of multimedia and convergent journalism.

The event was timed to the 50th anniversary of journalistic education at Kazan University and to the 10th anniversary of the Department of theory and practice of electronic Mass Media. The coordinator of the Conference was the Institute of Mass Communications and Social Sciences of KFU, co-organizers and partners were   Journalists Union of the Republic of Tatarstan, “Eurasia-media-centre” (School of BBC – Yekaterinburg), Society of orientalists of Russia, Saint Petersburg State University of Service and Economics, the Institute of Oriental Studies and International Relations of KFU.

Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Sociology Vasil Garifullin spoke about cooperation between the Institute of Oriental Studies and International Relations and the Institute of Mass Communications and Social Sciences: “We were pioneers in development of multimedia journalism. Joint organization of the event is connected with a lot of problems of development of Post-soviet area in  Central Asia which are discussed during the Conference; most interesting reports will be devoted to development of multimedia journalism in Kazakhstan. Eastern countries actively participate in the Conference”.

According to Vasil Garifullin there are a lot of problems: freedom of speech on the Internet, and information wars, that in future can lead to tragic consequences.  The Conference objective is research and development of modern multimedia media-system in the context of development of global networks, international relations and integration of journalistic cultures in the media scene, but one of the main tasks is elaboration of behavior recommendations in different situations of new reality.

Theme of knowledge and skills of modern journalists was developed by Head of the Department of Philology and Culture of countries of Far East Larisa Usmanova: “Globalization processes in modern world have huge scales. Using the Internet everybody can open page of regional edition including Kazan University web- site and see what is going on. This means that borders between global and regional mass media are blurred. Thereby necessity appears professionalism improvement of staff.  I hope that our Conference makes a contribution in this process”, - the scientist concluded.

Practitioners and theorists of journalism took part in plenary meeting. Deputy director general of television company Irina Subeeva presented a paper about innovative technologies in work of State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company “Tatarstan”,  the Conference participant from Kazakhstan Lazzat Nagiyatova presented joint work with Vasil Garifullin about freedom of press in the cultural context of developing society and editor of the newspaper “The republic of Tatarstan” Alexsander Latishev expressed his view on convergence of print and electronic version of the newspaper. Report of Head of the Department of Journalism of Saint Petersburg State University of Economics and Service of Valeriy Takazov dedicated to the same topic was also interesting. Moreover, he  organized “round-table” about “Qualities of Leader for Journalist”.

Tomorrow the Conference program will be rich as well. First of all, it will be work in sections “International media projects”, “Global networks and informational trends of East and West”, “Media education in the context of multimedia journalism”, and “History of journalism and multimedia”. Scientists from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Palestine and Uzbekistan take part in it. The presentation of joint research work of Russia with China, Japan and Palestine is also expected.

Moreover, the program involves organization of “round-table” on “Mass Communications of countries of Far East: cultural mission”, the host is Head of the Department of Philology and Culture of countries of Far East of the Institute of Oriental Studies and International Relations, Doctor of Social Science (Japan) Larisa Usmanova.

It is supposed that in the end of the Conference the resolution will be adopted. Theses of reports will be put on the Internet on the web-site of the Conference, complete materials will be published in single collection.
