President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov and Rector Ilshat Gafurov at Moscow State University

University clinics and medical education were the main topics of meetings with MSU's leadership.

Rector of MSU Viktor Sadovnichy greeted the guests by bestowing the title of Professor Emeritus upon President Rustam Minnikhanov. The President said that this was a pleasant surprise and promised to make much effort to utilize the MSU’s potential in Tatarstan.

Dr. Sadovnichy then suggested to make Dr. Gafurov a member of the Commission on Education and Science of the Institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Rector Gafurov proceeded to present Kazan University in his brief report. Naturally, the presentation was focused on medical research and education, including cooperation with Juntendo University and the opening of a medical simulation center there. This is one of the topics of interest for researchers from Moscow, they have more than once visited the Medical Simulation Center at KFU.

Rector Gafurov had his own program that included a meeting with Dean of Faculty of Medicine of MSU Vsevolod Tkachuk. Dr. Tkachuk said that medical research in Russia has historically been relatively weak because of the separation of medical and fundamental universities. The lab work culture has not been very developed, and fundamental medical faculties are now tasked with amending this situation. By the way, KFU provides education in 6 different medical specialization, whereas MSU – only in two. Director of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology Andrey Kiyasov said that KFU’s uniqueness lies in its fusion of biology and medicine.
