Kazan University and Rusfond Launch Collaboration to Battle Cancer

Russian Help Fund (Rusfond) charity and KFU will create a register of bone marrow donors in Tatarstan.

Rusfond launched the National Register of Bone Marrow Donors in 2013 in cooperation with academic institutions and state agencies. The register now includes 10 databases with 45 thousand names, more than 80 of them already became donors.

Viktor Kostyukovsky, Head of the Register Against Cancer Project, thanked Rector Ilshat Gafurov and the Insiitute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology for joining the project.

Kazan University was chosen for its infrastructure and labs. Recruiting process requires HLA phenotype and tissue compatibility tests. The price of one test kit is 12 thousand rubles.

The program starts in February 2016. Employees of the Saint-Petersburg Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Transplantology plan to arrive to Kazan and assist their colleagues in testing and donor recruitment.
