Rector Ilshat Gafurov Presented 2015 Annual Report to Staff and Students

The special meeting of the Academic Council was held on February 9th.

Several hundred people. Including faculty, administrative staff, students, and other interested individuals, listened to the Rector's speech.

As the Rector mentioned, Kazan University is now a huge corporation, with 9,061 employees, 43,913 students and 1,143 PhD candidates. The 2015 budget amounted to 11.96 billion rubles. The University paid 1.67 million rubles in taxes, becoming one of the major taxpayers in the Republic of Tatarstan.

The University’s progress is reflected in rankings. As we have written on more than one occasion, the University is now 301-350 in THE Rankings, 31st in THE BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings, 335th in the Humanities & Arts section of the QS by Faculty Rankings. KFU progressed in 10 different international and national rankings in total.

The estimated number of WoS and Scopus publication for 2015 is about 2,300 (final numbers pending). The impact factor of journal that included KFU’s articles grew from 1.54 in 2014 to 2.16 in 2015.

The Publication Activities Office is a special administrative unit that monitors relevant events and educates employees on how to be more successful in their article submissions. There is a special 24-hour course for academics that covers these matters.

The University’s research is supported by national science agencies. 194 projects received 96.6 million rubles from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research in 2015 alone. Total R&D works by the University amounted to 1.5 billion rubles in 2015.

New buildings were completed for the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies and the Institute of Chemistry. The campus of the Institute of Engineering was fully renovated. The Second Building finally received long-awaited insulation repairs, and the dorms on Pushkina street were fully refurbished as well. Also, the University Clinic was created by merging two of the successful municipal hospitals.

Naturally, all this contributes to the University's popularity among future enrollees. 22 thousand applications were submitted during the 2015 admission season by students from all the regions of Russia and 71 foreign countries. Their average Unified State Exam score was 76.4 – the best among ten federal universities.

Many other achievements and plans were covered during the report. The meeting concluded with award giveaways to the staff members who excelled in 2015.
