Opening of the II International KFU – RIKEN Workshop Devoted to Transdisciplinary Researches

Today, on the 19th of November, 2012, the II International KFU – RIKEN workshop devoted to transdisciplinary researches at the intersection of physics, chemistry and biology was opened in Kazan Federal University.

Rector of KFU, Mr. Ilshat Gafurov, made a welcoming speech and thanked professor Noyori, who was awarded a title of the Doctor Honoris Cause (Honorary Doctor) of Kazan University, for support of joint initiatives, including workshops.

Leading scientists of RIKEN, as well as heads of its scientific laboratories working in the sphere of physics, biology and chemistry came to participate in this workshop.

Today the RIKEN Institute of Researches in Physics and Chemistry established in 1917 plays the key role in researches conducted into natural sciences in Japan. The world-class laboratory infrastructure organized in RIKEN permits Japanese scientists to efficiently work in the field of modern scientific research and participate in cutting-edge technologies development together with their foreign colleagues. RIKEN conducts researches in such branches of science as physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, technical and computer sciences. Many of products developed by RIKEN officers are actively used in industry. The activity carried out by the RIKEN is sponsored by the government of Japan.

Reference information: Co-operation between Kazan University and RIKEN was initiated by the visit of KFU professor, Mr. D. A. Tayurskiy, to newly organized RIKEN Nanotechnology Centre and Low-Temperature Physics Laboratory (headed by professor K. Kono) in 2002. Mr. Tauyrskiy had long-standing contacts with professor Kono and many times made reports at seminars conducted by the latter in Tokyo University.

Signing of the Agreement of Joint Post-Graduate Studies in August, 2008 has become a logical continuation of these relationships, with Mr. Tayurskiy being the head of the Russian party to this Agreement. In October, 2010 a Scientific Cooperation Agreement was signed between the Institute of Physics of KFU and the Advance Science Institute being a part of RIKEN, along with the Agreement of Joint Laboratory Organizing in the Institute of Physics of KFU.

On April 28, 2011 in the Institute of Physics of KFU Alexander Badrutdinov, a post-graduate student of the Institute of Physics of KFU and the Institute of Researches in Physics and Chemistry of RIKEN, defended his dissertation. The unique thing about this event was that after defending his dissertation the young scientist got two academic degrees at the same time – the Russian degree of a Candidate of Physics and Mathematics and the international Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree of RIKEN Institute. And there is one more KFU post-graduate student staying now in RIKEN – Niyaz Beysengulov.

On May 02, 2012 during the visit of RIKEN delegation (headed by its President, Mr. Ryodzi Noyri) to Kazan a KFU – RIKEN scientific-and-laboratory complex, including laboratories of femtosecond spectroscopy, physics of high-correlated systems and thin-film system synthesis and analysis was organized.

The participants of the event shared their thoughts about the workshop. Nedopyokin Oleg Vladimirovich, the associate professor of the Chair of General Physics, said as follows: “We have been cooperating with Professor Kemitoshi Kono for a long time already. His researches play a significant part in low-temperature physics. During the workshop professor Kono gave a lecture, which was devoted to influence of electric and magnetic fields on dynamics of electrons located on liquid helium surface. We do research into fundamental science, and it can hardly be expected that it will be used somewhere tomorrow. But these researches can probably help to discover new-type excitations”.

Malkin Boris Zalmanovich, professor of the Chair of Theoretical Physics, noted: “Scientists have their own slang, their own “language”. And one of the lecturer’s tasks at such a large-scale workshop is to familiarize audience with an object of one’s research and challenges he faces, not forgetting about one’s merits”.
