Head of Webometrics Isidro Aguillo Visits Kazan University

The renowned web guru shared some secrets of his trade during this second trip to Kazan.

The now traditional meeting is aimed not only at web experts but at all interested parties. Many universities sent their representatives to KFU today.

Mr. Aguillo talked about the Open Science approach that is applied to Webometrics. Open Science is a concept uniting all types of research, both natural sciences and humanities.

The openness was mostly judged by publications in journals and their availability in libraries. However, the Internet age obviously dictates new standards.

Here are some pieces of advice from our guest.

First of all – branding is key. The brand is what makes a university recognizable in masses and among peers, so it’s essential that all the information is kept within one domain. KFU already followed that particular recommendation (namely, merging with the separate University TV site).

The next advice is content. Simply put, everything must be available on the website. And the texts must contain all the necessary hyperlinks to related departments and people.

Every employee must have a personal page on the site. Ideally it must always be usable as an electronic business card.

The main page must be rich in information and eye-pleasing. This is what we hope the soon to be introduced main page of KPFU.RU will be like.

Speaking about the most searched research areas – Mr. Aguillo mentioned medicine, petroleum and IT. Immense numbers of people are interested in those. So choosing them as priorities can be a fast track to global awareness.
