Research Team Receives Republican Award for Innovative Medications

State Prize of Tatarstan was given to the group led by Director of the Institute of Chemistry Vladimir Galkin.

The team consists of the employees of Kazan Federal University, Kazan State Medical Academy, Kazan State Academy of Veterinary Medicine, and Kazan National Research Technological University. During the last 15 years the team has created a number of medications of antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activity.

The leader of the group Dr. Galkin commented, “This prize is a result of the interdisciplinary team’s work – physicians, chemists, physicists, veterinarians, and pharmacists together. We have invented new substances for veterinarian medicine, and they can be later of use to people, too”.

The medications in question deal with various diseases, such as coccidiosis, mastitis, endometritis, eimeriosis, keratoconjunctivitis, ascaridosis, and others. All the substances have been successfully tested on animal subjects. Furthermore, 16 Russian patents were obtained in the last five years, applications to the Eurasian Patent Organization are underway.

The state prize itself was awarded specifically for the publications on “Directed synthesis of active substances in veterinary with the help of biomimetic approach”. All the members were also given their personal State Prizes in Science and Technology. Among the KFU’s employees those included were Dr, Galkin, Professor Irina Galkina (Institute of Chemistry, Department of High Molecular and Organoelement Compounds), and Chief Engineer Oleg Gnezdilov (Institute of Physics).
