New Building of Institute of Chemistry Officially Opened

Researchers have a comfortable new facility equipped with the best contemporary tech.

37 large labs found their home in an 8-floor building. Research in organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, petrochemistry, catalysis will be held here. This is a significant to the petrochemical industry of Tatarstan. Some of the new research in pharmaceutics will also be conducted here.

Namely, the research in biophysical chemistry is vital for treating lethal degenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, spongiform encephalopathy), increasing the biotech enzymes’ resistance to environmental factors. There is also work on innovative low-toxicity contrast agents for MRT diagnostics, antifungal and antibacterial medications.

Rector Ilshat Gafurov expressed his joy with the occasion, ‘Although the building officially belongs to the Institute of Chemistry, each of the floors is dedicated to its particular field of study, such as petrochemistry, pharmaceutics, and others. The facility unites chemists, physicists, geologists, and biologists, which should definitely increase their productivity’.

The construction was frequented by Interim President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. Today he emphasized how pleasant it is for him to visit KFU, because every time a new lab is opened or new research presented.

He said, 'When I first visited the Institute of Chemistry after becoming President, the state of the building was depressing. The situation has completely reversed, as we see. The University management as well as the governments of Russia and Tatarstan pay attention to providing the newest equipment without which there would be impossible to be on par with the world leaders in research. This attracts knowledge from all over the world to Kazan'. Interim President said that KFU is a beacon for other universities and thanked Dr. Gafurov and all the employees for their efficient work.

Another important guest was Albert Shigabutdinov, General Director of TAIF, the company which financed the construction.

‘Day by day we feel more and more lack of qualified professionals, but we also understand that this will soon be resolved – these people are now the students of the universities of Tatarstan, first of all KFU’, said he.

Tatneft, Tatchempharmpreparaty, NKNK, Haldor Topsoe are some of the other major partners of the University. There is also cooperation with leading world universities. Representatives of University of Calgary were among the guests of the opening ceremony. Professor Robert Gordon Moore, Head of the KFU International Lab ‘Interbedding Combustion’, told the reporters that this new building is up to world standards.

Note: Construction works started on September 21st, 2011 during the International Congress on Organic Chemistry. The building is adjacent to the existing building of the Institute of Chemistry.
