Genomic Portrait of Tatars to Be Compiled At Kazan University

Rector Ilshat Gafurov presented the project to State Counsellor of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev.

What is the real genetic history of an ethic group, how to treat hereditary diseases, how to revive historical heritage? Researchers working at KFU plan to find some answers to these and other questions. One of the biggest projects in this area is the 'Genetic Map of Volga Tatars'.

The project was shown to State Counsellor Mintimer Shaimiev on August 12th. Vadim Govorun, head of the project, Associate Member of RAS and Counsellor to the Rector of KFU, stated that this initiative is important not only to the ethnic identity. He said, 'We want to have a detailed map of the genomes of Tatars based on the exom variability. This info is essential for the studies of ethnic history, the search for ethnicity-related medical gene markers that can help us advance our diagnostics and treatment expertise'.

The project is still in its early stages, so the timeline will be known further down the road.
