The list includes 38 universities with Kazan Federal placed # 3.

According to Afisha, KFU's advantages are: the location, rich and proud history, great research school based on 4 priority areas, which are biomedicine and pharmaceutics, advanced materials, oil production, refining and petrochemistry, information and computational technologies and space research. It is important to mention, that the significant part of KFU's research equipment is unique and unprecedented in Russia. The university's alumni have good career opportunities as Kazan University collaborates with Kamaz, Tatneft, Sberbank, Schlumberger, Samsung, British Petroleum and others.

This ranking was motivated by Dmitrii Livanov's article in Vedomosti dated March, 2015 on “Why Russia Needs a Hundred of Strong Regional Universities”. There, once again, he spoke of the relevance to develop university clusters distributed throughout the country, which will serve as education, innovation and research hubs in the nearest future. The State is ready to invest into regional universities and expects them to meet certain educational standards.  

To compete with each other, regional universities will hunt talented prospective students offering them considerably more, than the average Moscow institution: scholarships, comfortable dormitories, internships abroad and contracts on employer-sponsored education.
