Scientists from KFU, Norway and Great Britain study risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in Russia

The seminar “Cardiovascular diseases in Russia – International research cooperation 2014-2019” currently takes place at Kazan Federal University.

“Our investigation where we are partnered with scientists from Norway, Great Britain and other Russian cities have started since 2013, - told us Vice-Director of Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology and cardiologist Raushaniya Gaifullina, - we are interested in this research not only from scientific point of view, but also from the point of its uniqueness because the project itself is interdisciplinary and conducted by 2 KFU units: Laboratory of sociological studies of the Institute of Social and Philosophical Sciences and Mass Communications and Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology”.

One of the project supervisors David Leon of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (Great Britain) pointed out two aspects of this collaboration: educational (shared experience and the building of the research potencial) and scientific (examination of people with cardiovascular diseases, their prevention and treatement).

“Our goal is to understand what is happening with people at the moment when they arrive to the hospital, how is the treatment process going on, which measures are undertaken and how efficient that is, - said D. Leon. – We plan to benchmark Russian and International indicators and treating methods and afterwards make a conclusion about most common causes of cardiovascular diseases and give prevention recommendations. Being conducted in Kazan and beyond the program is a global research requiring in-depth analysis. I'm keen on continuing collaborating with Kazan Federal University because it has all the necessary equipment to carry out this type of research”.

Some more facts about the educational aspect shared the Norwegian supervisor Tormod Brenn, Associate Professor of The Arctic University of Norway at Tromsø, “We are here to give lectures on cardiovascular diseases' epidemiology and statistical approaches. On the one hand this task is about data acquisition and joint analysis with Russian scientists, on the other about building up human resources, teaching people how to work with information, demonstrating new analytical methods and expanding levels of knowledge and competences”.
