The senator was a part of the 4th National Forum “Sanctity of Motherhood”. Her speech was titled “Centuries of Family Traditions – the Fundament of National Future” and touched upon the latest initiatives in family support in Russia.
She mentioned that family law had stayed unchanged for a significant period of time before she became a Chairwoman of the Stated Duma Committee for Family, Women and Children Matters.
Russian Family Code of 1995, as she stated, was modelled after the Soviet laws. Some changes were needed, for example, surrogate mothers’ services had to be included.
She mentioned a number of currently debated topics, such as divorce, abortion, termination of parental rights, and surrogacy. Senator Mizulina calls for a more specific regulation of the termination of parental rights because that should be the last resort.
She also supports the recently suggested toughening of divorce procedures.
