Universities work not only with students, but with pupils as well and it is not surprising: pre-university courses are organized in almost all Universities. However pre-university courses are aimed at pupils of 10- 11 forms, sometimes for 7-9 forms. Kazan Federal University teaches pupils starting from the 1st class: 8-year old children often visit lecture halls and laboratories. KFU Professors and famous Tatarstan people conduct tuition free classes on weekends and during school holidays for students of the Children`s University that last for 30 minutes.
Children`s University was established in 2011 on the initiative of Valeriy Letyaev – Deputy Director of the Institute of History, KFU. This project was supported by KFU Rector and Chairman of the State Council of Tatarstan Republic. Children`s University is opened for everyone, among its students there different children, some of them are even with disabilities. Distant education is also possible: Internet-broadcastings of lectures are open for everyone on web-site of the Children`s University. Here you can find videos of delivered lectures that prepares University studio.
Topics for lectures can suggest not only teachers, but children and their parents as well. Among teachers there are Associate Professors, Professors and Heads of KFU Institutes, Faculties and Departments.
This year about 300 pupils attend the University regularly. And about 700 pupils attend only those classes that are interesting to them.
KFU experience in work with children of primary and secondary forms is not unique. The same project is realized by Volzhskiy University of Humanities of Volgograd State University since 2010 and this project was also initiated by Valeriy Letyaev.
Such programs exist in Europe for more than 10 years and this experience was expanded on all continents. The KFU Children`s University cooperates with foreign colleagues, exchanges experience, teaching materials and representatives of the European network of Children`s Universities planned to visit Kazan to get acquainted with Russian experience.
