The department was formed on the basis of the department of general and cultural linguistics and the department of translation theory and verbal communication. Each of the departments had their own history and traditions.
Academic staff of the department conducts active research and educational activities in the field of General Linguistics and Turkology by continuing and developing the traditions and scientific schools of adjunct professor I.I. Khalfin, professor. M.G. Kurbangaleev, E.M. Akhunzyanov, M.Z. Zakiev, F.S. Safiullina, R.R. Zamaletdinov (general, contrastive and typological linguistics, Turkic and Tatar linguistics (synchronic and diachronic approaches), teaching the Tatar language to a foreign audience, translation theory, lexicography, cultural linguistics and intercultural communication), of general and Turkic linguistics). Currently, the combined academic staff of the department consists of 4 Doctors of Philological Sciences (academician M.Z . Zakiev, professor G. H Gilazetdinova, R.R. Zamaletdinov (Head of the department), A.Sh. Yusupova) and 13 candidates of science (R.M. Bolgarova, F.Kh Gabdrakhmanova, E.N. Denmukhametova, G.F. Zamaletdinova, EA Islamova, Z.N. Kirillova, G.R. Mugtasimova, G.A. Nabiullina, R.S. Nurmukhametova, R.R. Salakhova, M.R. Sattarova, F.R. Sibgaeva, K.S. Fatkhullova) and 1 senior teacher (A.R. Ayupova).
Department of General Linguistics and Turkology offers following educational programs:
-Applied philology: Tatar language and literature, theory of translation with advanced study of foreign language (bachelor's degree);
-Applied philology: Intercultural communication, theory of translation with advanced study of foreign language (bachelor's degree);
