The department was formed on the basis of the department of general and cultural linguistics and the department of translation theory and verbal communication. Each of the departments had their own history and traditions.
Currently, the combined academic staff of the department includes 4 DScis in Philology (academician M.Z. Zakiev, professor G.H. Gilazetdinova, professor R.R. Zamaletdinov (Head of the department), professor A.Sh. Yusupova), and 13 PhDs (R.M. Balgarova, E.N. Denmukhametova, F.H. Gabdrakhmanova, G.F. Zamaletdinova, E.A. Islamova, Z.N. Kirillova, G.R. Mugtasimova, G.A. Nabiullina, R.S. Nurmuhametova, R.R. Salahova, M.R. Sattarova, F.R. Sibgaeva, K.S. Fathullova).
The department provides postgraduate and doctoral studies in the following specialties "Russian language" (10.02.01), "Comparative-historical, Typological and Contrastive linguistics" (10.02.20); postgraduate studies in "Languages of the Russian Federation peoples" (10.02.02), "Theory of Language" (10.02.19); Master's programme in "Philology"; There is also the Cultural Linguistics Lab.
The lecturers, doctoral candidates, graduate students and undergraduates of the department are involved in research and teaching activities in the following academic schools:
1) prof. E.M. Ahunzyanov - general, contrastive and typological linguistics;
2) prof. M.Z. Zakiev - Tatar linguistics (synchronic and diachronic approaches);
3) prof. F.S. Safiullina - teaching the Tatar language to a foreign audience, translation theory;
4) prof. R.R. Zamaletdinov - cultural linguistics and intercultural communication.
The academic staff of the department contributes greatly to the implementation of the legislation on languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan and to the major social projects of the republic and the country (Ana Tele - Mother Tongue online school of Tatar language was developed in cooperation with English First). The department devised the "Linguistics First Aid" project.
