The Division of the Translation Studies and Cross-Cultural Communication was founded in 2011 as part of Kazan Federal University’s Institute of Philology and Arts.
Kazan Federal University is situated in the region where representatives of different nationalities have lived together for ages. Kazan is located on the line between Europe and Asia, at the crossing of languages and cultures. This fact provides great opportunities for studying the interaction between different languages and cultures.
The main purpose of the new Division is to train highly skilled translators and interpreters to translate from Russian into Tatar and from Tatar into Russian, translators and interpreters with command of European (English, German, French) languages; specialists who have a great command of two official languages of the Republic of Tatarstan and know the history of Russian and Tatar literatures, who are capable to work in the field of philology and the humanities, linguistic, inter-personal and inter-cultural communication at education, culture and management institutions in the conditions of multiethnic and multicultural environment in the Republic of Tatarstan, the Volga Region and other regions of the country.
Three branches of bachelor’s degree programs meet demands of this purpose. According to the chosen specialty of studies, students receive the following qualifications: bachelor of philology and linguist-translator. The level of the Bachelor’s Degree training is the basis for continuing education in Master’s Degree program.
Curriculum of the translator training program includes general disciplines in Liberal Arts, social and economic subjects, disciplines in Mathematics and Sciences, general professional and specialty disciplines. The following special disciplines are offered: translation from Russian into Tatar and from Tatar into Russian, from Russian into English and other European languages, basics of interpreting, extempore translation, two-way and synchronous translation. Besides, the curriculum offers lecture courses in Theory of Translation and Comparative Linguistics.
Academic staff of the Division includes well-known specialists with vast professional and teaching experience. They share their skills, broad experience with students and help them acquire the challenges, secrets, specifics of this wonderful, humane and noble profession which unites people.
