The Department of Translation Theory and Oral Communication continues research and education traditions of the Department of Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies of Kazan University and the Department of the Tatar Language and Cross-cultural Communication of the Tatar State University of the Humanities and Pedagogy (TSUHP).
By the decision of the university Academic Council, the Department of Tatar as a Second Language was founded in 1992. Doctor of Philology, Professor Flyora Safiullina chaired it. The department’s work focused on teaching Tatar to students of all university faculties and international students and scholars as part of academic exchange programs. Minor specialty “Translation Studies and Practice of Translation” opened at the department in 2005. In 2007 the department was renamed and became the Department of Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies.
The department of Teaching Tatar in Russian Schools was founded on the basis of Kazan State Pedagogy University’s Department of Tatar Linguistics. Doctor of Pedagogy, Professor Firaz Kharisov headed it. The department’s fields of work included important problems of teaching Tatar in Russian-speaking classroom, problems of bilingualism and polylingualism in the Republic of Tatarstan, linguistic processes and language policy in the republic. In 2008 it was decided to rename the department and it became the Department of the Tatar Language and Cross-cultural Communication.
On September 1, 2011 the Department of Translation Theory and Oral Communication was founded at Kazan Federal University’s Institute of Philology and Arts. It unites academic staff, research and education potential of Kazan University’s Department of Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies and TSUHP Department of the Tatar Language and Cross-cultural Communication. Doctor of Philology, Professor Alfiya Shavketovna Yusupova is the department chair.
The department’s work aims continuous development of the research and academic basis for studying the theory and practice of translation, fundamentals of translation and interpreting, main constituents of translator’s competence; also for teaching languages as a means of interpersonal and intercultural communication; for further research and methodological cooperation and partnership with other universities and representatives of different cultural and language groups.
The department offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees on the following specialties: 031001 Philology, 031202 Philology. Applied Philology. Translation and Translation Studies.
The academic staff of the department conducts research on topical problems of history, theory and didactics of translation, carries out fruitful work on publishing scientific papers and monograph studies, development and implementation of communication-oriented studying and teaching manuals, takes active part in republican, all-Russian and international conferences. The department staff is a team of like-minded fellows who contribute a lot of efforts to modernization and improvement of the educational process in philology disciplines at Kazan Federal University.
