Two key notions in the department’s name – “general linguistics” and “cultural linguistics – directly correlate with the main fields of teaching academic disciplines and realization of research interests of its academic staff.
The department started its work in 2003 in the field of general and comparative linguistics. At present it has considerable experience both in general and comparative linguistics, and also in cultural linguistics. The department’s academic staff deserves special credit for successful work in cultural linguistics.
In 2005 R.R. Zamaletdinov founded the research school “Theoretical and Applied Aspects of Cultural Linguistics (based on the Tatar language)” at the department. In a related move, a research laboratory appeared at the department in 2009. Master’s Degree program was launched in 2011. Research projects on cultural linguistics were realized with grant support in a relatively short period of time. 1 doctor’s thesis and about 10 theses for candidate of science degree were defended (mainly on the material of Tatar, but also Russian and English). Thanks to active work of the academic staff and graduate students, secondary schools and universities students pay more and more attention to this field of research. For instance, the annual conference on cultural linguistics (Tatar Cultural Linguistics: Problems and Prospects) now attracts a larger number of participants and a wider range of paper topics.
The department offers post-graduate degrees in the following specialties: Languages of the Russian Federation Peoples (10.02.02) and Comparative-Historical, Typological and Comparative Linguistics (10.01.20).
The department’s academic staff includes 2 doctors of philology (Academician M.Z. Zakiev and Professor R.R. Zamaletdinov). 9 candidates of science (Candidate of Philology M.Kh.Valeyev, Candidate of Philology F.Kh. Gabdrakhmanova, Candidate of Philology G.F. Zamaletdinova, Candidate of Philology E.A. Islamova, Candidate of Philology R.S. Nurmukhametova. Candidate of Philology M.R. Sattarova, Candidate of Pedagogy R.A. Sakhabutdinova, Candidate of Philology F.R. Sibgaeva, Candidate of Philology D.Kh. Khusnutdinov), two senior lecturers (R.M. Bolgarova, R.B. Kamalov).
The department’s academic staff teaches main theoretical linguistic courses at Kazan Federal University’s Institute of Philology and Arts, such as: Introduction to Linguistics, General Linguistics, Contrastive-Comparative Linguistics, and Cultural Linguistics. They also teach such courses as Practicum of Tatar and Russian, Development of (Russian and Tatar) Oral and Written Speech, etc.
Along with teaching, the department’s staff takes active part in research, academic and educational work of the faculty and the institute on the whole. They are authors of monographs, studying and teaching manuals, course curriculums, scientific papers on debatable issues and topical problems of modern linguistics, and also the issue of Russia’s languages formation and development, particularly the Tatar and Russian languages. Research works, manuals and methodological projects of the department’s academic staff has been widely used by many other higher education and professional education institutions and secondary schools of the republic.
The department’s academic staff pays particular attention to organizing research work with the institute students. All lecturers consult students on qualification and course papers. Research groups of students conduct scientific work on different fields and important problems of linguistics:
Ethnogenesis of Turk-Tatars (academic advisor - M.Z. Zakiev);
Cultural linguistics and general linguistics (academic advisor – R.R. Zamaletdinov);
History of writing and scientific heritage of outstanding Tatar linguists (academic advisor – G.F. Zamaletdinova);
Cultural-linguistic potential of spiritual and religious lexis (academic advisors – M.R. Sattarova, F.R. Sibgaeva);
Topical issues of Russian historical lexicology and lexicography (academic advisor – E.A. Islamova);
Journalism and publishing (academic advisors – M.Kh. Valiev, R.B. Kamalov, R.A. Sakhabutdinova).
Even though the Department of General Linguistics and Cultural Linguistics is relatively young, it carries out large-scale academic, educational and research work with the goal to train skilled workforce and enhance the prestige of the famous Kazan Federal University.
