The department of History of Russian literature was founded on the basis of the department of Russian literature of KFU and the department of Russian literature and methods of teaching of Tatar State Pedagogical University.
Literary studies in Kazan go back to XIX century and famous scientists of that epoch, such as V.M. Perevoschikov, N.N. Bulich, A.S. Archangelskiy, B.V. Varneke, P.D. Mindalev, etc. They contributed a lot to the study of Russian philology; they analyzed its connection with Byzantine, West European and Old Slavonic literatures. Scientific literature societies that worked in Kazan University in 1806-1916 also had a great influence on the development of literature and critics of the Volga region.
The achievements of the philologists of the XIX century served as a foundation of XX century schools of Kazan University, for example, the schools of methodology of science (prof. A.N. Voznesenskiy), the problems of romanticism (prof. N.A. Guliaev), artistic and literature relations (prof. I.G. Pechtelev), the history of literature critics (prof. V.N. Konovalov), literature of local history (prof. E.G. Bushkanets), integrated study of artistic creations (prof. U.G. Nigmatullina). These branches are recognized in Russia and abroad.

Kolmakov), the analysis of literary-critical activity of professors of the Kazan University (associate professors L.Y.Voronova, M.M. Sidorova). The laboratory of “Literary local history” was founded in 2011 (the head of the laboratory – associate professor M.M. Sidorova, laboratory assistant A.I. Khamidullina). It studies the history and modern state of literary culture in our region.
