Carboniferous and Permian Earth systems, stratigraphic events, biotic evolution, sedimentary basins and resources

Objectives

The Carboniferous and Permian successions of Russia have a long history of study, and host fuel and mineral resources of huge economic importance. Excellent outcrops provide unique insights into the stratigraphy of both terrestrial and marine settings. However, correlation of marine and non-marine successions is still problematic due to the lack of precise biostratigraphic control and unambiguous interpretation of interacting geo- and biosphere processes. Deciphering the causes that led to the most severe of all mass extinction events at the end of the Permian and analyzing the preceding events that changed ecosystems on land and in the sea, is still a challenge and demands global interdisciplinary research.

Past, present and future studies of the Upper Paleozoic sedimentary basins

Nikolai A. Golovkinsky (1834 – 1897), first professor and leader of the Kazan School of Geology, laid some of the earliest foundations for the study of Upper Paleozoic sedimentary deposits in the Volga-Kama basin of Tatarstan. The Carboniferous and Permian sedimentary basins display a wide variety of facies, as their evolution was associated with immense paleogeographic and biotic changes in space and time. The climatically-driven increase in bioproductivity and the formation of extensive reef complexes led to the formation of oil and gas deposits in Russia and all over the world, hugely increasing the importance of multidisciplinary studies of the entire suite of biotic and abiotic processes in marine and non-marine ecosystems.

In this context, in 2014 Kazan Federal University established a joint working group on “Stratigraphy of oil-and-gas bearing reservoirs of the Late Paleozoic” headed by Jörg W. Schneider, Vice-Chairman of the International Subcommission on Permian Stratigraphy. The initial meeting of this research group will be at the Kazan Golovkinsky Stratigraphic Meeting – 2014 and will be held at the Kazan Federal University in Russia from October 20 to October 23, 2014. This meeting is an excellent opportunity to bring together those who are interested in the preparation and organization of the XVIII International Congress on the Carboniferous and Permian which will be held in Kazan in August 2015, under the patronage of the International Subcommission on Carboniferous and Permian Stratigraphy, supported by the Russian Commissions on Carboniferous and Permian Stratigraphy. The Golovkinsky meeting is organized in conjunction with the Field Meeting on Carboniferous and Permian Nonmarine – Marine Correlation, Freiberg 2014, Germany and thus the synthesis of both meetings will be included in the program of the XVIII International Congress on the Carboniferous and Permian.

Topics

The meeting will cover all aspects of Carboniferous and Permian stratigraphy, biotic and abiotic events and the evolution of sedimentary basins at that time, and their resources. The meeting aims to provide a platform for discussion of research fields and for international exchange of ideas between research groups working on the Carboniferous and Permian periods.

We invite geoscientists to present contributions to the following topics:

1. Carboniferous and Permian stage boundaries, stratotype sections, and GSSPs

2. Carboniferous and Permian high-resolution marine and non-marine stratigraphy (multi-proxy correlations) and calibrations

3. Carboniferous and Permian plate tectonics and orogenies

4. Late Paleozoic biotic evolution: systematics, ecosystems, and paleobiogeography

5. Sequence stratigraphy of sedimentary basins

6. Carboniferous and Permian paleoclimate

7. Carboniferous and Permian mass extinctions and recovery

8. Carboniferous and Permian coal and mineral deposits, conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon systems

This meeting will serve to establish cooperative research projects, which are suited to raise income from various national and international funds.

Venue

The City of Kazan is among the most ancient cities in Russia. With a population of 1.2 million people, it is a cultural and industrial center included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, and its mosaic of Muslim and Christian architecture contributes to its unique atmosphere and scenery. Kazan is situated in the center of European Russia and easily accessible from Europe via Frankfurt, Prague, Stambul, Moscow or St. Petersburg.

Travel

Kazan is quite easy to access by public transport. There are two easiest ways:

By air to Kazan via Moscow or St. Petersburg.

By train to Kazan via Moscow (12 hours) or St. Petersburg (14 hours).

Obtaining a visa to visit Russia: Please check to see if your visit to Russia will require a visa: http://www.visitrussia.org.uk/visaform/not-need/ or http://ru.vfsglobal.co.uk/. The process involves contacting the nearest Russian embassy or consulate in the country where your passport is issued. We will send an official invitation letter issued by Kazan University to delegates who need to apply for a visa. Please send us a request for a visa invitation.

Meeting Format: The meeting will consist of concurrent sessions of talks, each of 20 minutes (including questions and discussion). Talks will be grouped based on broad geological topics. There will be one poster session, which will include afternoon refreshments. Speakers will normally be limited to one presentation (talk) at the meeting. Individuals may participate as a non-presenting coauthor on additional talks. Individuals may participate in as many posters presentations as they wish.

Call for Abstracts: Abstracts for the meeting are due on September 20, 2014.

Abstracts of oral or poster presentation are welcome. Please indicate your preference when submitting. Abstracts, please, submit by e-mail (attached file in Word format) to: Milyausha.Urazaeva@kpfu.ru. Deadline for submission is September 20, 2014. The official language of the meeting is English. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and published in an abstract volume.

Language: The official language for the scientific program and all the businesses of the meeting are Russian and English. The working language is English.

Accommodation: A large variety of hotels is available in the city of Kazan.

Travel insurance: Participants should have valid health insurance for the entire journey. All foreign participants are required to bring with them health insurance contracts, covering the period of the trip, from an insurance company that provides an international insurance policy.

Climate: Kazan has a continental climate with cool “Golden autumns”. October is cool, average +8degC to +15degC, infrequently exceeding +24degC or dropping below +0degC. There is a possibility of rain.
