Tatarstan is very rich in natural bitumen, with estimated deposits of 1.4 to 7.8 billion tonnes, or 36% of surveyed Russian resources of this particular kind. The average bedding depth is 80 200 meters.

The Department was created in 2011 and is tasked with using the University's potential in dealing with the new issues of natural bitumen extraction and refining (petrol fractions, diesel fractions, waxy high-index oils, bitumen materials). Both bachelor and master programs are available.
