The Department consists of 4 professors, 10 associate professors, and 6 assistants. 

Laboratories:

  2. Hydrobiology and Molecular Systematics,
  3. Biodiversity of Invertebrates and Bioindication,
  4. Ecology of Aquatic Organisms and Aquaculture,
  5. Biodiversity and Ecology of Vertebrates,
  6. Embryology and Functional Histology.

Laboratories are equipped with cutting-edge equipment: transmission (translucent) electron microscope JEM-100 CX; raster (scanning) electron microscope Hitachi NV-1000 with system of energy dispersive analysis Qantax 50; research microscopes Hirox KH-7700, Axio Imager A2 etc.; Rotary microtomes HM 325; equipment for molecular studies (PCR amplificator MJ Mini, Transilluminator Vilber Lourmat - 254 nm), etc. 

Additional facilities include Edward Eversman Zoology MuseumWhite Sea Biological Station (Karelia, Russia). 

The Department serves as a basis for the Kazan branch of Parasitological Society of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Kazan branch of the Entomological Society of RAS, Kazan branch of Hydrobiological Society of RAS, Kazan Society  of Marine Fishkeeping and Aqua design. 


Brief historical background

The first lectures on zoology and comparative anatomy in Kazan Imperial University were read in 1823, by Professor E.I. Eichwald, corresponding member of Petersburg Academy of Sciences. The department as a separate entity originates from the Сabinet of Сomparative Anatomy of Animals, organized by the University in March 1843 by Professor P.I. Vagner. In 1865, the Zootomic and Zoological cabinets were created and later, during the reorganization of the university at the beginning of the XX century, they have been reorganized into the Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Department of Vertebrate Zoology, respectively.

In 2012, the departments were renamed to the Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Functional Histology and the Department of Biological Resources and Aquaculture, respectively. Finally, on September 1, 2014, as a result of the merger of both departments the Department of Zoology and General Biology was formed.
